The finalists of the 2019 New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young
Adults have been announced.
The awards celebrate the best books for young readers and are judged in six
main categories; Picture Book, Junior Fiction, Young Adult Fiction, Non-Fiction,
Illustration, and Te Reo Māori. The winners of those categories will all
compete to be named the Margaret Mahy Book of the Year. The judges will also
present a Best First Book award to a previously unpublished author or
illustrator from a shortlist of five titles.
To celebrate the finalists in the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and
Young Adults we’re giving away a bumper prize pack containing
all the finalist titles to one lucky winner. That’s 29 brand spanking new
books to add to your shelf!

Donovan Bixley is one of my favourite authors, he writes the kind of books
you turn to when you've had a rough day, when you're tired, feeling a bit
unhinged and need to find a cow on a bus. Wait, what?
If you're a parent you will understand that there is always that one
book. It must be read daily, multiple times is best and especially when you need
to turn a frown upside down. Or sometimes, the thought might cross your mind to
take that book and hide it for all eternity. In my house, that book is Donovan
Bixley's A Day
at the Zoo, a bold and bright board book for toddlers.
My son picked out this book himself and spent hours looking at the pictures
when he was very small, now he confidently flicks through the pages telling me
about the animals and colours in both English and Te Reo. I'm so grateful that
we have New Zealand authors writing books that Kiwi kids love. Sadly, “A Day
at the Zoo” has gone missing, which I'd like to quickly point out that I have
nothing to do with its disappearance, storytime with Flamingo's and Hippos is
on hold for now. While we continue to look for the lost Zoo book the new
favourite is another Bixley gem, The
Wheels on the Bus, filled with lots of Kiwiana treasures to find.

At Mighty Ape we love food, not only do we stock the best cookbooks in
the land we have a whole
category dedicated to eating.
This is why we love Annabel
Langbein. As one of New Zealand's most recognisable bakers Annabel has
built up a long list of food lovers all over New Zealand and in Australia,
including some of our staff who enjoy sharing recipes and homemade goodies from
her cookbooks.
Perhaps one of our favourite treats (aside from Bananas of course) is cake,
which makes an appearance at almost every staff gathering. Sometimes, we even
try to find excuses to share a slice.
It's somebody's birthday? Cake.
