Supplements 101 - The Basics Part 1 Glutamine

By Mark

Hey Fit Fam!

We're bringing you some basic info on some of the most common used supplement ingredients. First up is GLUTAMINE!
One of my favourite supplements and one I have taken almost every day for the past 5 years!

Do you want to promote muscle growth, reduce muscle break down and strengthen your immune system?

Keep reading if that sounds like you!

Glutamine is here to support the effort you are putting into your training sessions. Realize your potential and achieve your goals faster with this powerful amino acid.

If you are working hard in the gym each day you don't want to short change your self with a lack of recovery. Longer recovery time means longer time to reach your goals. Unfortunately for us all, training deals a great amount of stress onto our muscles which can mean our bodies actually lose 50% of there Glutamine stores! This is far from ideal considering Glutamine is also the first fuel of our immune system and 2nd fuel of our digestive system! Now our bodies are very smart at releasing deficiencies and trying to correct them, and it does with Glutamine, to an extent.

If we have just depleted 50% off our Glutamine stores our body will borrow some from the immune system and digestive system's pool of Glutamine to help our muscles recover. I think you can see the problem with this, our immune and digestive systems become compromised. The same goes for if you are sick, your body is under stress burning up more Glutamine then usual and when it runs out it will actually attack your muscles for there Glutamine stores! This will cause your recovery to slow way down and even lose muscle mass.

Glutamine is one of the best anti catabolic ingredients around

Keep Catabolism away and bring in an Anabolic Environment.
Whether your trying to pack on muscle or burn fat, the first step towards your goal is work. The next step is recovery, which you can speed up with Glutamine. Don't put in the hard yards only to sell your self short on the recovery side.

Lets imagine your building a house, that house is made up of bricks and timber (Protein & BCAA's) to build that house you need workers (glutamine) more protein and BCAA's the bigger that house can be The more Glutamine you have (or workers you have), the quicker that house can go up. There is no point chugging down protein drinks if you don't have the workers on site to make use of all those extra building blocks.

The best thing about Glutamine? – It's Cheap! you can generally find it for around 50c a serve.

Quick Run down on Glutamine Benefits:

  • Glutamine has been linked to protein synthesis. It prevents your muscles from being broken down in order to supply Glutamine to other cells in your body.
  • Glutamine helps maintain cell volume and hydration, speeding up healing from wounds and burns plus speeding up recovery.
  • Replenishes declined Glutamine levels from training sessions.
  • Research has shown Glutamine can help you produce growth hormones. A study has shown 2 grams of L-Glutamine increased growth hormones by over 400%.!
  • Glutamine will help boost your immune system. For bodybuilders, this is important since heavy weight training sessions massively deplete Glutamine levels. (Again, its the primary fuel source of our immune system.)
  • Glutamine is one of the most important and under looked nutrients for your intestines. It has the ability to ‘repair’ a “leaky gut” by maintaining the structural integrity of the bowels.
  • This benefit should take you by surprise! Glutamine can even cure ulcers! Studies have gound that 1.5 grams of Glutamine a day had a 92% cure rate in 4 weeks.

Convinced yet? not only is Glutamine important for athletes but regular folk as well with all the other benefits it offers. so what are you waiting for?
