Mighty Ape's Top 10 Albums of 2015!

By Dan

This year has been absolutely incredible when it comes to Music. We've been absolutely spoiled with far too much amazing music to keep up with. While dominated by several huge albums from the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift & Adele, there was still space for some smaller albums to shine. While it's tough to narrow down the list to only 10 albums we've given it our best shot and think the albums listed below all deserve at least one listen before the year is out.

Let's jump right into it and see what made the list!

10. Lana Del Rey – Honeymoon

Lana Del Rey had some huge boots to fill when it came to topping her previous albums, yet she somehow managed to retain her signature retro sound & style with the release of ‘Honeymoon’. In a time when most pop artists focus more on digitally created albums, Lana Del Rey instead opted for slow moody orchestral strings and percussion, lending a classy old school feel to some of her best work to date!

Top Tracks: ‘High by The Beach’, ‘Swan Song’, ‘The Blackest Day’

9. Tame Impala – Currents

An audiophiles dream, Tame Impala's ‘Currents’ is an assault of incredible sound and offers a selection of beautifully crafted songs perfectly showcasing frontman Kevin Parker's knack for production, arrangement, song writing and vocals on par with, if not better than any of the bands previous work.

Top Tracks: The Less I Know The Better', ‘The Moment’, Let It Happen'

8. Death Cab For Cutie – Kintsugi

‘Kintsugi’ is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold, silver, or platinum. As a philosophy it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. Death Cab embrace the album name and show that they can come back from hardships sounding even more beautiful than before.

Top Tracks: ‘No Room In Frame’, The Ghosts Of Beverly Drive', ‘Everything's A Ceiling’

7. Justin Bieber – Purpose

Whether you love or hate him, there's now no denying the mark Justin Bieber has left on the world of Pop. ‘Purpose’ see's Bieber teaming up with some of the biggest names in the industry (Skrillex & Diplo) for one of the most catchy upbeat albums of the year. Blending club friendly beats with super smooth RnB vocals, ‘Purpose’ see's the young pop star entering a new much more grounded chapter in his career and is sure to have won him some new fans (this Gorilla is one of them :P).

Top Tracks: ‘No Pressure’, ‘Where Are Ü Now’, ‘Sorry’

6. Deafheaven – New Bermuda

By far the darkest and most overwhelming album on this list, there was no way we could not include Deafheaven's incredible album ‘New Bermuda’. A viscous onslaught of atmospheric, dark instrumentals accompanied by an incredible vocal performance see's this album standing proud amongst some of the top Metal releases of the year. Few albums managed to evoke emotion like ‘New Bermuda’ did and is a much welcome return to form for the band. One thing's for sure, Deafheaven have found their groove and are here for the long run.

Top Tracks: ‘Come Back’, ‘Baby Blue’, ‘Luna’

5. The Weeknd – Beauty Behind The Madness

The Weeknd's ‘Beauty Behind The Madness’ may just be used as a blueprint on how to create the perfect club friendly Pop album going forward. While not overly complex on a lyrical level, the album showcases The Weeknd's stunning vocals and sees him doubling down on what he does best. Catchy hooks and some of the most dance-worthy beats on any album this year.

Top Tracks: ‘Dark Times’, ‘The Hills’, ‘Can't Feel My Face’

4. Ghost – Meliora

The shroud of secrecy behind this Sweedish band only adds to their perfectly honed image and sound. Jumping from Classic to Prog Rock and then to Glam Metal, Meliora keeps up the blistering pace and has even turned a few non-rock friends into fans after hearing one of the may incredible tracks on the album!

Top Tracks: ‘Mummy Dust’, ‘Spöksonat’, ‘From The Pinnacle To The Pit’

3. Adele – 25

I'm just going to go right ahead and proclaim my love for Adele. Not being a fan before, I really didn't know what to expect. Was it music that only my Mum or Grandma would enjoy? Oh how very wrong I was. After getting a copy of 25 to see what all the fuss was about, I've hardly gone a day without at least one play-through. ‘25’ is both sophisticated and romantic and showcases Adele's near untouchable ability to belt out some of the most powerful ballads I have ever heard.

Top Tracks: ‘Hello’, ‘Remedy’, ‘All I Ask’

2. Grimes – Art Angels

Art Angels is the fourth album by Grimes. Spanning over 14 tracks, the new album features collaborations with Janelle Monáe and newcomer, Taiwanese rapper Aristophanes. It was recorded primarily in her home studio in Los Angeles. Like all of her previous albums, ‘Art Angels’ was written and recorded entirely as a solo endeavour. The new album features more live instrumentation than ever before on a Grimes record and features piano, guitar and violin, continuing her evolution as a musician and a producer for her most ambitious album to date.

Top Tracks: ‘Belly Of The Beat’, ' REALiTi', ' Flesh without Blood'

1. Kendrick Lamar – To Pimp a Butterfly

Was there ever a doubt that Kendrick's latest album would be at the top of our list? With stunningly complex instrumentals and next-level lyricism, ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’ saw Kendrick Lamar reaching soaring new heights on what is arguably one of the most thought provoking albums released in recent years. Offering deep insights into the mind of Kendrick, TPAB is not an easy album to digest by any means, but once you crack through, the sheer musical prowess on offer will keep you coming back for repeat listens time and time again!

Top Tracks: ‘How Much A Dollar Cost’, ‘Alright’, ‘King Kunta’
