What to look for in a Protein Bar!

By Talman

We LOVE protein bars here at Mighty Ape – Protein Bars are a great solution for a quick and easy meal/boost for those on the go! Not all protein bars are created equal however… Today we're going to look at a couple of things to look out for next time you purchase a Protein Bar!

When selecting a protein bar one key factor to look at is the protein count – protein aids in keeping us feeling full for longer, you'll also want a higher quality protein. Look for Whey Protein Isolate, Milk Protein Isolate, and Casein.

Ideally you aren't going to want something with much sugar (less than ideal energy source). It's important to note here a lot of bars use sugar alcohols which technically aren't listed as sugar in the macros to make it taste sweet while still being ‘low sugar’. Sugar alcohols do however have a laxative effect in large amounts, higher amounts of calories than sugar, and can cause gastrointestinal distress.

On top of this other things to look out for are:

  • High fat count (bad)
  • High Fibre count (good)
  • High calorie count (bad)

While protein bars are good on the occasion they shouldn't be taken more than once a day ideally. It's all about balance – never underestimate the power of whole foods!

Our best selling and personally my favourite protein bars are our Quest Bars! If you haven't already, check them out, Cookies & Cream is amazing!

Pro Tip - microwave Quest Bars for 10–15 seconds for a life changing experience!
