The 10 Best Moments for Computers in 2014

By Andi

As we head into the tail end of December, we figured we'd take a look back at the year and its top moments for Computers. We had some big announcements and events that had us computer monkeys at Mighty Ape HQ giggling like kids during recess. So after some deliberation and serious debate (that may have involved Nerf guns) we came to an agreement on the top 10 Computing moments of the year, and one conclusion:

You certainly can't call 2014 uneventful, that's for sure.

Release of the NVidia GTX 900 Series

While only releasing a couple of months ago, the evolution of the GTX 900 Range is already pretty darn exciting.

Featuring the new Maxwell architecture that allows for lower power consumption and a better processing bandwidth, the GTX 970 and GTX 980 already have a number of models for people to choose from.

And if that's not enough variety, the GTX 960 is just around the corner…

Affordable 4K Gaming

When we were first introduced to 4K displays with televisions, they boasted massive displays and even bigger price tags. Who'd have predicted that when the size was scaled down for 4K desktop monitors, the price would scale down considerably too!

The result are fantastic resolutions you can really appreciate in displays like the ASUS 4K UHD LED Monitor.

Being able to appreciate a next-gen display while still keeping all your organs? yeah, we'd call that a pretty good moment this year.

The Expiration on the Cherry Switch Patent

The Cherry Switch in all its different iterations is the foundation for the mechanical keyboard. Yet, given its design was founded on the assumption that the primary function would be typing, there's never been an opportunity for it to change or evolve.

With the expiration of the Cherry Switch Patent, other companies are now free to develop their own iterations on the classic switch. The result is a series of gaming mechanical keyboards from the likes of Razer and Logitech

The AC Wireless Boom

The latest wireless networking standard was finally approved in January, and really took off through the year.

Perfect for video streaming and gaming over Wi-Fi, it's no wonder so many people raced out and grabbed themselves an AC Wireless Router.

We're now seeing the AC standard in any number of consumer devices – from the latest iPhone, to the awesome range or AC Wireless Routers (like the stunning Nighthawk X6 pictured.)

The NZXT H440 Case

It's hard to believe this chassis has only been around a short while, given it seems to be absolutely everywhere. Sure, we're guilty of using it in our Mighty Kong build, but when there's something out there with this much demands for it, you'd be silly not to…

Sacrificing any front entry for a truly minimalist design, the H440 took the world by storm. We wouldn't be surprised if it's already the best selling chassis out there.

So maybe a fancy new case isn't going to push computing power forward by any leaps and bounds, but there's something to be said for gaming in style…

0db Gaming GPU

Silent gaming might not immediately strike you as a big deal, but when you consider the recent push into smaller, lounge savvy gaming rigs, a 0db GPU starts to get a bit more interesting…

By not having the fans spin up until they reached a thermal threshold, GPUs like the Asus STRIX can keep the card completely silent for non-intensive processes. Made possible through the NVIDIA Maxwell architecture, which allows for greater power efficiency and much lower thermal output.

Now you can relax after an intense night of gaming and watch some movies as a cool down exercise.

X99 Motherboard Series and Haswell-E

X79 was due for an update, and Gamers and Content Creators alike were not disappointed. The Haswell-E CPU's gave Intel users their first taste of Octa-Core computing through the Intel i7–5960K.

DDR4 also made an appearance along side the new chip set with speeds averaging 3.0GHz for amazing low latency computing.

Needless to say, if you were waiting for a sign to upgrade your motherboard… this was it.

G Sync Monitors

We were lucky enough to get our hands on this new technology very early, but even then we knew it was going to be a game changer.

Like V-Sync, G-Sync removes visual tearing on your monitor without throttling down your GPU's performance.

By allowing your graphics card to dictate when your monitor refreshes, you get the best of both worlds.

Best of all, only a few months into this new tech and we already have a G-Sync range available in NZ from 1080p all the way to 4K!

First Platinum rated Power Supply from Corsair

Power supplies seldom get talked about but when you're building an insanely powerful system you're going to want a PSU that'll meet the demand of your components.

The AX1200i was the first desktop PC power supply from Corsair to use digital control and Corsair Link to bring you a whole new level of performance and customisation to the highest end Gaming Rig.

By making on-the-fly adjustments for voltage regulation, you're getting the most efficient, clean and stable power going to your rig.

Game Capture & Youtube at 60 FPS

It's safe to say that game capture isn't just a fad, with both next-gen consoles integrating it into their core architecture. With that in mind, it's no surprise how quickly capture devices are evolving to offer the highest quality capture possible.

Anyone that frequents the Gorilla Rig section knows we love posting benchmark and gameplay videos of our builds, so naturally we jumped on 60FPS capture in a heartbeat.

Of course, we weren't the only ones, with thousands of hours of game play and live streams going online every day!

So, those are our top 10 Computer moments this year. Some were game changers, others were just fun to witness, but they all made for a truly great year to be a gamer.
