One of our favourite things about Guild
Ball is the variety of different play styles and paths to victory
available. You can win by outscoring your opponent or take a more aggressive
approach by taking their players out of action.
With nine (soon to be ten when the Farmers release) different Guilds
currently in the game we thought we'd enlist the help of a local veteran in
putting together a guide to the strengths and weaknesses of each guild.
So we'd like to welcome in local pundit JS for some guest
analysis. You can also follow him on his blog Guildballnz for more coverage of the local
New Zealand scene and general GB musings & memes.

The Kick
Off! starter set for Guild Ball is one of the best, if not the best
tabletop gaming starter sets which we've got our hands on to date.

This past Saturday was the one Bolt Action players had been looking forward
to- the release of Bolt

Since getting our hands on the new rules on Saturday players around the world
have been eagerly pawing through the books to check out the changes and start
thinking about how to adapt their tactics.

It's mid month so we're a bit late, but its time to check out this
month's Wargame of the Month, Beyond
the Gates of Antares.
Beyond the Gates of Antares is the brainchild of Rick Priestly and the crew
at Warlord Games and builds upon many familiar mechanics and systems from Bolt
Action in an original sci-fi setting. So let's take a closer look…

The typical battlefields of Dropzone Commander are semi-ruined urban areas,
with intact buildings housing objectives playing a central role in the games
rules. This, combined with Dropzone Commander's 10mm scale means that players
may find that the scenery they use for other systems doesn't quite work.
But the good news is that there are plenty of great options available to
construct an awesome DZC battlefield without having to spend heaps.
Dropzone Commander Card Terrain
One of the awesome things which Hawk Wargames did with Dropzone Commander is
release it with a range of pre-cut, pre-folded colour card tiles and buildings
with which to set up your battlefield. If you've purchased the Two
Player Starter Set then you will already have 10 of these buildings along
with 1 set of urban street posters to get you started.

As I'm just getting into Dropzone Commander myself I reached out to a few of
the local players up here in Auckland to get an escalation campaign started to
help introduce more newbies like myself to the game.
So let's take a look at how to get involved…
What is an Escalation League or Campaign?
Escalation leagues or campaigns are a time honoured tradition in war gaming,
with roots in the Tale of 4 Gamers series from White Dwarfs back in
the day. Basically you get a group of players together who are interested in
starting new armies or gaming systems and begin by collecting a starter box or
small warband and start playing games.

Now it's time to take a closer look at the forces of Dropzone Commander,
including their background and a quick overview of how they play and look on the
table top. We've also included links to some fantastic blogs which go into even
more detail.
So lets take a look at who you can play…
