Warhammer Age of Sigmar: A Tale of Six Warlords

By David

The release of Warhammer Age of Sigmar 2nd Edition this past weekend means that now is the perfect time to try out gaming in the Mortal Realms.

So we've put together an elite crew of salty grognards for whom the initial release of Ae of Sigmar back in 2015 didn't grab their interest but have now succumbed to the temptation of all the shiny new miniatures, high-fantasy background and round-based madness.

Thus the Tale of Six Warlords begins, as our intrepid generals embark on a quest to grow small Age of Sigmar armies to begin a Season of War- Firestorm campaign and grow their skills and forces in order to seek the eternal glory of the wooden spoon at a full sized AOS tournament.

So let's met our players and check out their army choices…

David- The Apes of Sigmar

Stormcast Eternals

For myself this Age of Sigmar project is a resurrection of a project started when AOS first came out in 2015. I'd assembled and painted the starter set Stormcast Eternals, played a game or two and then got distracted by other systems. So this is a new beginning for me in the mortal realms.

This is also a use what you have project for me, in that my force will be comprised almost entirely of models from each edition's starter set, with additional hero choices or weapons options converted or created using scratch built components. The one exception to this is the box of Judicators which I have in the stash which will also be used.

Daniel- The Doom Raiders

Slaves to Darkness

I have chosen to go with the Slaves to Darkness but focusing on the Mortals side of things rather than the demonic. My warband is at this time is focusing on the undivided Chaos gods but doesn’t have the strength or commitment to align themselves with one true god. This could all change on whim as the gods pull is strong and mens’ souls are easily swayed.

The paint theme is a simple Silver armour with a brass trim and ebony horns they will be led by a Lord of Chaos on foot and have a simple starting point of Warriors of Chaos and Chaos Knights eventually incorporating a chariot or two and who knows what else as that is all dependant on what the Dark Gods bless us with.

Greg- The Chamber Australis

Stormcast Eternals

For my first foray into the world of Age of Sigmar, I'm starting off with a Stormcast Eternals force which will be based around the contents of two Soul Wars boxes. I reckon this should give me a pretty solid starting force.

My plan is to have them based around both gold and silver colouring but branching out a little when it comes to the other parts of the models, potential steering away from the more traditional reds and blues and heading toward greens, a colour I seem to be drawn to despite having painted so much of it on Flames or War and Bolt Action forces. I may throw a little purple in there for some regal tones.

FOR SIGMAR!!!!

Paul- The Krusty Oldies

Legions of Nagash

Many, many moons ago when I was a wee lad one of my friends told me about a tabletop wargame that he played called Warhammer. I was excited and asked him to provide me with more information. He gave me what at the time was called 'The White Lists" a set of get you by army lists while the army books came out..... I was convinced that Dwarves were going to be my thing, that is until I reached the very end of the booklet and there it was .....UNDEAD.

So now on the eve of the release of Age of Sigmar 2.0 I find myself looking to dust off the bones, stretch the rotting sinew and once more take my very eclectic collection of undead to war. The minions of Nagash (and who knows even the crusty old clown himself) will once more be (poorly) commanded by me in this journey.

Join me ..... If you dare!

Darren- Fraternal Idoneth Soul Heisters

Idoneth Deepkin

I have been interested in getting into AOS for a while and no better time than a new edition!
I have chosen to play Idoneth Deepkin due to their aesthetics and deep unique lore. How can you say no to Soul stealing Alves riding sea monsters! I knew the first units I wanted in my army would be the Akhelian Morrsarr Guard it is a fantastic kit (bar the flying stand) and they can be your battle line if you have an Akhelian King.

To start I will be building a small elite fast-striking list containing an Akhelian King, Aspect of the Sea and two units of Morrsarr Guard.

I am looking forward to trying out these soul stealing Alves in AOS.

Andrew- Ain't afraid of no ghosts

Nighthaunts

After two years of resisting the lure of Age of Sigmar, I've finally succumbed to its siren song. I'd been thinking about it for a while, but none of the factions grabbed me. The Soul Wars announcement trailer changed this. The expanded Nighthaunt faction bought me a one-way ticket on the hype train to the Mortal Realms.

I'm not yet sure which direction I'm going to take my army. It looks like there will be some chapter tactics-esque options in the Battletome, so I'll wait for that. Until then, I'll see how my drybrush-heavy painting technique works with fragile models.

What Next?

Over the coming weeks we'll be documenting the progress of our warlords, their hobby endeavours and the first steps onto the battlefield.

If you'd like to join in you can comment below with the details of your new army as well and send us photos on the Mighty Ape Hobbies Facebook page.
