Give your PS4 a Storage Boost

By Andy

Reaching the upper limited of your beloved console's storage? The fix isn't as intimidating as you may think.

Back in the day, it was a pretty tedious task expanding the storage in your PS4. It would involve opening up the console and extracting the HDD that was hidden away inside. Thanks to some nifty updates from the team at Sony, it is nearly as simple as just plugging in a external storage device.

There are a couple specs that you need to hit with your Storage Device. It needs to be between 250GB and 8TB, and it needs to be USB 3.0 compatible.

It has to be noted that not all Hard-Drives are made equal. SSD storage devices and even SSHD Hybrid Drives will have an impact on how quickly your games will load, so definitely something to consider. In terms of performance/speed:

SSD < SSHD < Standard HDD

After plugging in your Hard-Drive, you'll just need to jump into your settings and scroll down to the Devices menu. Hit USB Storage Devices and select the Hard-Drive you would like to format. Just note that at this stage you will lose anything that was stored on that drive.

From this point forward, anything new you download and install will be stored on your External Hard-Drive.

Next step is what software you'd like to move onto your Hard-Drive. Jump back into your settings and hit Storage again. Select System Storage then Applications. From here, you can go through your software library and move anything into your Extended Storage by selecting your program and selecting Move to Extended Storage.

And you are all done. Happy Gaming!
