Wargame of the Month: Bolt Action

By David

Welcome to September's Wargame of the Month, and this month we've chosen Bolt Action from the good folks at Warlord Games.

September is a big month for Bolt Action, with the new Second Edition rules & starters due to release on September 17th and it's shaping up to be our biggest ever tabletop gaming release.

So let's take a look at what the fuss is about…

What is Bolt Action?

Bolt Action is a 28mm scale platoon level World War Two game, with players fielding small forces comprising of several infantry squads, support weapons teams and a couple of armoured vehicles. For the treadheads amongst us there's also a Tank Wars variant which enables players to field armoured platoons.

Unlike some other WW2 games Bolt Action doesn't try to be a simulation, streamlining the multitude of different weapons used down to a select group of weapons classes, like rifles, light machine guns, medium anti-tank guns etc. Each nation gets a set of unique special rules, as do certain units, to help differentiate them on the tabletop and allow a variety of strategies. Thus the overall feel is akin to that of watching a WW2 movie or TV series like Band of Brothers fast paced, action packed and great fun without too much rivet counting.

Getting started with Bolt Action

As we mentioned earlier the Bolt Action Second Edition rules are due to release this month on September 17th, which means now is a perfect time to get started playing the game or to start a new army.

The new Band of Brothers Starter Set is the most obvious starting point for new players, featuring two plastic starter forces; US Airborne & German Grenadiers; the rules, pin markers, order dice, templates and some terrain- everything you need get going (except for glue & paint).

For those wanting to pick up a new force all at once there's a great range of Starter Armies available, which include the core units used for each respective army for a great price of $159.99.

If you need some inspiration or help in getting started we've produced a heap of Bolt Action blogs over the past year including both of my personal army projects to date; British and German.

Wargame of the Month Deals

You may have noticed that unlike previous months we don't currently have a Wargame of the Month sale running for Bolt Action, and that's because we're doing things a little differently this time around.

The great news is that we've just completed a major repricing of our entire Bolt Action range, which has meant price drops in our everyday pricing for hundreds of boxed sets and blister packs and making Bolt Action more affordable for New Zealand players than ever before!

We'll also be following up the release of the new second edition products with heaps of great specials and bundle deals to help you expand out your new armies or update your forces to the new rules. And stay tuned for more deals on Bolt Action suitable terrain in the coming days…

Presenting Rumble in the Jungle 2017

Rumble in the Jungle is our second annual Bolt Action tournament and this year it will be ushering in the new era of second edition events with 4 rounds of 1000 point games.

Once again we'll be hosting this event up at the Mighty Ape offices in Rosedale on Auckland's North Shore and entry is $20 until September 30th, with late entries $30.
