Description

Fusion energy research and development is entering a new phase with ITER, the world’s largest tokamak fusion facility. The tokamak device concept is the most developed in fusion energy research. However, there are still unresolved critical issues, particularly related to the control of huge currents in a tokamak plasma. The Stellarator-heliotron device is another promising concept that does not need these plasma currents. This book describes both the fundamental and latest knowledge about plasma confinement in stellarator-heliotron devices, a complementary and alternative concept to tokamaks in fusion energy development. Confinement physics is comprehensively described, ranging from introductory to topical details such as MHD, transport, and kinetic effects. Validation and verification of these physical models is discussed in line with the progress of experimental projects. In addition, reactor design and prospects are covered together with technological developments. Last but not least, the impact of 3-D physics, which is inevitable in this concept and in tokamaks, is discussed.
