Good

  • The game is awesome. All the below comments are quite true. Ship-To-Ship, Boarding and PvP is excellently executed while Boarding still needs some work.
  • Puts a new meaning to Nation to Nation combat. Read some reviews about it.

Bad

  • On-Land and character texture looks like they fell of top of an ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down.
  • Slow, SLOW update process. I've spent total of 9 hours updating in 3 days.

Overall though, the game has been quite fun so far. I recommend to those who are on the fence about this game or those who are sick of all the usually MMORPG to go for it. It's a whole new experience.

Pirates is a good game, good, but there is still definite room for improvement.

Good bits – Detail on ships in ship to ship encounters is fantastic, people get blown overboard by cannon fire and celebrate on deck when there is a victory. Decks are crowded, which is nice, much better than the two to three people (if any) you get on other pirate games. Hulls get visibly damaged, sails come down, the sea looks superb.

  • Animations in hand to hand combat are fun and look quite different depending upon your fighting style. You want to learn that next move just to see what it will look like on screen.
  • Towns are unique and populated by interesting NPCs.

The game plays a lot like the Sea Dogs games, except in a slightly more arcady way. Crew mysteriously come back to life after an engagement and the ship repairs itself. Principles of moving your ship around are pretty much identical.

Bad bits – Bugs! This game is full of bugs they should have probably ironed out in beta. This in turn leads to big patches every few days, which can be a real pain to download. Hopefully this will not be a problem for long though as they do seem to be making an effort to iron these out.

  • No collisions. Characters walk right through each other. This can spoil the immersion.

At the end of the day though, what will probably make you buy this or not is whether or not you like the idea of sailing a ship around, and saying ‘yo ho’. It isn't perfect, but if you're a fan of pirates there is nothing better on the market, and it will give you hours of enjoyment.

Description

Pirates of the Burning Sea is a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game set in the Caribbean islands of the 18th Century. You play a bold sea captain, master of your own ship and crew, as you seek glory and adventure across the trackless deep.
  • A game for serious gamers. Gorgeous graphics using the latest high-end hardware. Broadband connections required for smooth play. We're making this game for those who want the best experience possible.
  • Make your own career. Your fortunes shift with the winds and your desires. Buy a naval commission and command a ship of the line. Turn traitor and work as a privateer for your former foes. Navigate the perils of war and weather as a merchant. You can do whatever your reputation allows - and your reputation is yours to create.
  • Epic adventure on a human scale. You'll be on a server with no more than a few thousand players. It's a world big enough for constant adventure, but small enough that your reputation carries weight with the people you meet.
  • Player-created content. We put the player community in the designer's seat. Using industry standard tools, you can create new textures and even 3-D models and submit them to the peer-reviewed web site for incorporation into the game. And you own what you create - if you design a new sword hilt or throne or sail design texture, you can make it freely available or charge for it within the game world. Earn in-game income from the sales of your designs! Or keep them to yourself and customize your own unique gear to the nth degree.
  • An ever-expanding game. Thanks to Valve's Steam technology, your computer will download new game content as it becomes available. Regular updates will roll out with new features, including avatar play, the magic system, and property development. The initial game of military action, trading fleets, and bloodthirsty piracy will evolve into a rich and player-directed world.
  • 30 Days free play included.

Please note:
An internet connection is required to play this game. A monthly subscription will be required after the first 30 days free play expires.
