Description

Built to guard the Fords of Isen, Helm’s Deep was the greatest fortress in the kingdom of Rohan. Formerly known as Aglarond, Helm’s Deep came to be named after King Helm, who led his people to seek refuge behind its walls during the Long Winter.

The stronghold set into the head of a valley against the White Mountains and composed of two main structures: the Deeping Wall and Hornburg. A long causeway swept up from the valley floor to the main gate, over which loomed the great stone tower housing the mighty Horn of Helm Hammerhand. Within the Keep lay the Great Hall, where the king held court in times of siege, and beyond, carved into the mountainside, the stables and entrances to the Glittering Caves.

The valley itself was barred by the Deeping Wall, a curving redoubt twenty feet thick and forty high, strong enough to repel even the ten-thousand strong army of Saruman, but for a single, critical weakness. For beneath the wall the Deeping Stream drained through a low culvert, barely tall enough for a man to stand in, yet vulnerable to the designs of a Wizard …
