Description

This tale began as a bedtime story that folklorist Tad Tuleja told his son when he was four. Blending elements of the animal fable and the quest narrative, it shows how even the smallest and humblest of creatures, if they believe in themselves, can work wonders. The story is set in a time long ago when all living things had voices. In those days some small friendly animals known as aarborgs lived in the High Desert in a place called the Fold. During a long summer without rain, a young aarborg named Hesperides walks bravely into the vast World Beyond the Desert to search for the water that the aarborgs need to survive. With the help of a tiny lizard, a sleepy owl, a fast-talking crow, and a kindly cactus, he uses a magical Water Key to fulfill his quest and bring the life-saving water back home. Along the way he learns a bittersweet lesson about the circle of life, the value of friends, and the gift of serving others.

Author Biography:

Tad Tuleja is a writer and retired university teacher who holds a Ph.D. in folklore from the University of Texas at Austin. The author of thirty books, he has published works on history, literature, anthropology, children's folklore, music, and slang. His poems have appeared in Urthona, The Road Not Taken, Adirondack Review, and other journals. Under the musical alias Skip Yarrow, Tuleja has released two EPs: he performs his songs on www.skipyarrow.com and on You Tube. Hesperides the Aarborg, which began fifty years ago as a bedtime story for his four-year-old son, is his first children's book. It reflects his longstanding affection for animal fables and for the landscape of the American Southwest, where he lives with his wife and songwriting partner Andrée Nolen. With child-like enthusiasm and ink-stained hands, Philadelphia-based graphic artist Robbi Burns illustrates comics, storyboards, murals, album art, and 2d Games. A 2015 graduate of Memphis College of Art with a BFA in sequential narrative, Robbi has also studied at the Illustration Academy in Kansas City. After producing storyboards for clients including Big Lots, TriHealth Hospital and PBS through Baker & Hill, they released Glimmer's Rim, a role-playing adventure book published by [Glass//Cutter] in 2020. Robbi has attended the Pax Unplugged and IX art shows, has tabled at conventions around the country, and continues to push imaginative boundaries by creating sci-fi/fantasy illustrations, punk music, and improvised comedy.
