Description

A first-of-its-kind survey of the human body as represented in graphic design. There have been many celebrated volumes published on the history of the nude in classical art, but this will be the first book to cover the nude form and its representation in non-traditional art forms. Coming from Steven Heller and Mirko Ilic, two stars of the design world, this book will be by turns humorous and illuminating, and will be of great interest to professional graphic designers as well as design fans. This curated survey of more than 600 images shows how graphic designers have pushed the classic traditions of nude figure painting and drawing in to new realms via magazine covers, film and theater posters, book jackets, advertisements, and other forms of media from around the world.

Author Biography:

Mirko Ilic started his design career in Europe, where he became well-known for his illustrations, posters, and book and record covers. He eventually became the art director of the international edition of Time Magazine. He then went on to be come the art director of the New York Times Op-Ed section. Over the course of his illustrious career he has done design work for almost every celebrated print publication, including Rolling Stone, National Geographic, The Wall Street Journal, and Sports Illustrated. He has received numerous awards and his work is featured in the permanent collections of both the Smithsonian and MoMa, NY. Steven Heller, author and editor of over 130 books on graphic design, satiric art and popular culture, is the co-founder and co-chair of the MFA Designer as Author program at the School of Visual Arts, New York. He is also co-founder of the MFA in Design Criticism, MFA in Interaction Design, MFA Social Documentary Film and MPS Branding programs.
