From a humble early childhood in rural Missouri, Harry Truman worked his way up the ladder of local politics, with the help of the political boss of the area, to become an effective United States Senator overseeing military spending during World War II. The Senator's committee found so much inefficiency and overcharges that his work caught the attention of President Roosevelt who was looking for another Vice President to run with the popular President for an unprecedented fourth term. Brought to office on the death of FDR, Harry Truman, who had not even had enough time to become familiar with teh secret weapons program President Roosevelt had approved, was thrust on the world stage. He brought to an end successfully the two-front war making a decision to use atomic weapons against Japan. But not long afterward, Truman would be faced with Stalin's land grab. The nation would come to the aide of South Korea in yet another conflict. The Truman Doctrine of containment would be the official US policy until Nixon's detente. Truman's presidency proved controversial and in 1948, the little man from Independence surprised pundits in beating Governor Dewey.
