Birds of America, by naturalist and artist John James Audubon, is among the finest ornithological works ever completed. Audubon set out to catalogue and portray every species of bird in North America. Plate 26 shows the wonderfully colourful Carolina parakeet, a small species of parrot now sadly extinct. In the text accompanying the image, Audubon comments on the dextrous and noisy nature of flocking parakeets, characteristics ably captured in this study. Author Biography:

John James Audubon was an artist and naturalist, and his magnum opus The Birds of America is considered one of the most important ornithological works ever completed. The Fitzwilliam Museum is fortunate to hold a copy of this wonderful collection of illustrations. This puzzle shows the Carolina parakeet, a species of bird that very sadly became extinct in 1918. Specimens of this small species of parrot can be seen in the Cambridge Museum of Zoology.
