"A phenomenal novel with a twisting edge! "
5 stars"

Bulibasha is an exceptional novel that portrays a kaleidoscope of themes including culture, family, hierachy and rivalry all balled into one. This extraordinary story is voiced through a teenage boy Simeon who depicts from his point of view, the struggles him and his family go through and the ways in which he defies standard family rules (established by his grandfather Tamihana, otherwise known as Bulibasha) and also conservative cultural beliefs in order to overcome the adversaries he and his family are faced with throughout the novel. Witi Ihimaera writes with such style and fluidity that you get lost in the world he creates in Bulibasha. He is such an innovative and inspiring writer and if you enjoy drama, competition and a twisting edge, this is a must read!

'Bulibasha' is the title given to the King of the Gypsies, and on the East Coast of New Zealand two patriarchs fight to be proclaimed the king.

Tamihana is leader of the great Mahana family of shearers and sportsmen and women. Rupeni Poata is his arch enemy. The two families clash constantly, in sport, in cultural contests and, finally, in the Golden Fleece competition to find the greatest shearing gang in New Zealand.

Caught in the middle of this struggle is the teenager Simeon, grandson of the patriarch and of his grandmother Ramona, struggling with his own feelings and loyalties as the battles rage - on many levels ...

Bulibasha is a rich, warm novel with a powerful closing twist which will stun the reader. Witi Ihimaera's first novel for six years, it shows him at the height of his powers.
