Description

Renowned landscapist and precursor to the Impressionist movement, Joseph Mallord William Turner shook up the art world of his time. Hailed as the absolute master of light, he was one of the first to go beyond the limits of figurative art to offer a new perception of painting which became the ultimate model for his contemporaries.

Author Biography:

Eric Shanes is himself a painter, and one of the world's leading authorities on J.M.W. Turner. His first book, Turner's Picturesque Views in England and Wales, won the Yorkshire Post Art Book Award for the best art book published in 1979, while his subsequent Turner's Rivers, Harbours and Coasts, published in 1981, was praised as making "a major contribution to the appreciation of the art of J.M.W. Turner". Eric Shanes was the founding editor of Turner Studies, a journal published by the Tate Gallery, London. He is a Vice-President of the Turner Society and its current Chairman. He organised the Turner: The Great Watercoloursexhibition held at the Royal Academy of Arts in London to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the death of the painter in 2001
