There was a time when the only markers necessary to identify someone as a Mormon were an appreciation for the Book of Mormon and acceptance of the gospel of Jesus Christ as restored through the prophet Joseph Smith. Not any longer. None of those attributes matter today unless you are willing to demonstrate, in the words of former president Gordon B. Hinckley, "uncompromising loyalty" to the Church itself, especially to The Church's leaders operating out of Salt Lake City. Today, a growing number of otherwise devout Mormons are being harshly disciplined for failing to display proper deference toward "Priesthood Authority," or otherwise neglecting to obey decrees handed down by the Church hierarchy -never mind if some of those orders contradict the revealed word of God. There is an entirely new definition of "Apostasy" being bandied about in the Church today, and if you are one of those Mormon Mavericks who believes in the scriptural adage that "we ought to obey God rather than men," you may also find yourself branded a heretic and drummed out of the church you grew up in.
