In past careers, the author has been a lawyer, an administrator, and a chief editor. He spent 23 years with Caltech at NASA JPL, where he handled institutional operations. It resembled a concession booth in a nighttime carnival. But it sat all by itself on the side of a dark, leafy, country road under a starry sky, where it was brilliantly illuminated with string lights.
