"Ultimately disappointing"
3 stars"

Viking is a rather simple game for all it does. It is a hack and slash in the well loved Norse mythology. The first time you try this game, you'll most likely be interested if your into hack and slashes but soon after a few hours spent the gameplay will begin to feel stale.

Now, Creative Assembly are known to make amazingly revolutionary games but this one… this one is definitely not in that category. The story is really quite silly and not all to grand but I'm guessing they were focussing more on the combat than story. The fighting in this game is lots of fun with enough combos and moves to keep any hack and slash fan happy but it just seems to lack a certain polish or charm for it to excel.

You'll engage in massive siege assaults everytime you reach a certain story point, and these massive battles, I must admit, are impressive as literally hundreds of undead (yes undead) and Vikings clash together. The only thing disappointing bout this part is your seemingly cliché objectives and the frame rate dipping rather erratically. Oh yeah, also during these battles you'll encounter giant freaking trolls! These battles are quite simple and once you lower its health enough you'll have to do a God of War style button sequence to take it down.

Ultimately Viking was a lost opportunity. The fighting was decent, the graphics pretty good but what it lacked in was story, replayability and just something unique to keep it fresh. If they had added more enemies, varieties of quests, hell even RPG elements! It could have been so much more than another average game to collect dust on the shelf.

Worthy of a rent, but don't make the same mistake as me and buy it. =P

"Best hack n' slash game around before God of War III..."
5 stars"

This game achieves what it strives for…cutting up enemies and journeying in the life of a Nordic viking.

Graphics are amazing and the sea is quite a spectacle. Fire and weaponry is well detailed along with gold and caves.

Gameplay is varied on different combos that you'd expect to throwing axes and healing yourself with potions. Enemies will counter you and archers will prove pesky. Your adversaries are also very persistent in killing you unless you run away.

Climbing the watchtowers is amazing and the large scale battles are epic, you even get to choose which areas to attack with dragons – so an element of strategy is involved.

Unfortunately, there's isn't much to collect apart from gold and the 3 “Dragon stones” across the islands…you can only buy new combos, the same throwing axes and potions over and over again.

This is repetitive but much better than Conan or Beowulf. Better than Assassins Creed too.

If you like hack n' slash games, viking mythology, action games or even platforming titles, pick this up. Even RPG fans will enjoy this.

A fierce struggle is taking place within Asgard, the realm of the Norse Gods. The battle has escalated, spilling over to the mortal world of Midgard and now a Champion must be found, a Warrior than can sway this war that threatens the fate of Asgard and the Gods themselves.

The goddess Hel - daughter of Loki, Norse God of mischief, has been banished from the heavenly kingdom of Asgard for defying Odin’s rule. Angry at her fate, she seeks to release the ancient wolf-god Fenrir which legend tells will bring about Ragnarok - the apocalyptic battle that will destroy Asgard and the Gods. With her army of resurrected Viking warriors, Hel marches on the unsuspecting mortal realm of Midgard.

Odin’s daughter Freya, goddess of love and wisdom, is appointed the task of stopping Hel and defending the future of mankind. For her champion she chooses Skarin, a great but troubled young warrior, ignorant of the true reason for his favour with the Gods and thrust into the midst of their bitter war.

As Skarin, players will experience unparalleled battle scenes, leading the charge in a titanic clash between powerful gods and mere men. War on an unprecedented scale will rage across a beautifully realised Viking landscape. Vast, living islands, free form worlds filled with discovery, stealth, brutal combat and culminating in epic battles the like of which have never been seen on console before.

  • The story of a Viking Hero. Skarin is an uncompromising force. A plaything of the gods rebelling against their selfish agenda. The definitive Viking warrior.
  • Rich Viking Lore. The violent and glorious world of Viking mythology brought to stunning life. Players will write their own legends to be told around the campfire.
  • Vast open world environments. Explore, uncover and fight your way across huge next gen worlds full of combat, exploration and quests.
  • High impact, brutal combat engine. Experience intensely physical melee combat. Dismember enemies with deadly combat moves in a whirlwind of death.
  • Mythical Powers. Tame dragons and command them to rain fire upon your enemies. Call on magic and the power of the gods to win the mortal war.
  • Free your people. Liberate your Viking kinsmen from the clutches of Hel. Earn their trust and their sword arm. Fight alongside them in battle.
