Description

This is the first general overview of the history and present state of utilitarian ethics. Geoffrey Scarre traces the 'doctrine of utility' from the moralists of the ancient world, through the great Enlightenment and Victorian utilitarianism, to the lively contemporary debates about its viability. Besides looking at the ideas of such pivotal writers as Bentham, Mill and Sidgwick, Utilitarianism also discusses the work of several less well-known figures from the Chinese sage, Mo Tzu, to radical thinkers like Priestley and Godwin in the eighteenth century and the 'Ideal Utilitarian', Hastings Rashdall,in the twentieth. Finally, Geoffrey Scarre maps out the more recent debates raised by opponents of utilitarianism, and argues that while it may not be a faultless moral doctrine, utilitarianism still has relevance today. Written to be accessible to undergraduates as well as to professional philosophers, Utilitarianism will be essential to those studying, and teaching, moral philosophy.
