Description

From June 19-22, 2013, OCAD University's Faculty of Design presented Urban Ecologies 2013, a conference that examined the impact of emerging categories of research and practice that are shaping the future of design in our cities: visualizing information, thinking systems, regenerating cities, building health, and creating community. This publication updates and expands the content first presented at the conference, and features content by Teddy Cruz, Peter Hall, Terreform ONE, and over one hundred individual contributors.

Author Biography:

Jesse Colin Jackson is an Assistant Professor of Electronic Art and Design at the University of California, Irvine. His creative practice focuses on object- and image-making as alternative modes of architectural production, manipulating the forms and ideas found in the human landscape through the expressive opportunities provided by digital visualization and fabrication technologies. Jackson has received project funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Centre for Innovation in Information Visualization and Data Driven Design, the Digital Media Research and Innovation Institute, and the Ontario Arts Council. He was a 2014-2015 Hellman Fellow at the University of California, and a 2008-2010 Howarth-Wright Fellow at the University of Toronto. Patricio Davila is a designer, artist and educator. He is an Assistant Professor at OCAD University teaching in the Faculties of Design, Liberal Studies, Digital Futures and Graduate Studies. Patricio is director of Zero Lab, a research centre investigating the use of design and art practices for promoting environmental justice and imagining sustainable futures. He is also a member of the OCADU Mobile Media Lab and Visual Analytics Lab. As a designer and artist he has exhibited nationally and internationally. He has created mobile, locative and new media installations including: Fauna of the Mirrors, Tent City Projections, Chthuluscene, The Line, In The Air Tonight, E Tower, System for Forgetting and Remembering, and Parkdale Versions. His research and practice focuses on the politics and aesthetics of participation in the visualization of spatial issues with a specific focus on urban experiences, mobile technologies and large-scale interactive public installations. Roderick Grant is Chair + Associate Professor of Graphic Design at OCAD University, in Toronto, Canada. Before joining OCAD U in the Fall of 2009, Roderick taught design at the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. He holds an MFA degree in Graphic Design from the Rhode Island School of Design, and a BA in Urban Studies from New College of Florida. Roderick's engagement of both undergraduate and graduate level pedagogy centres on the critical interrogation of representation, narrative construction, concepts of space and occupation, urban thresholds and design activity across dimensional practices. His recent scholarship on design pedagogy includes presentations and workshops with the Council of Ontario Universities, and the AIGA National Design Educator's Conference.
