This book was inspired by events from the author's life. When her younger brother joined the Marine Corps after 9-11 she became very involved in military life. When he left for Iraq in 2003 she felt compelled to write a story for the children left behind by servicemen and women called up to serve in times of war and peace. The characters in t he book are regular kids living with someone who is serving or has served our country. It shows today's children they are not alone in their sadness and struggles but also gives them hope and comfort. It reminds all of us that we can never forget those who have sacrificed so much and many who paid the dearest price of all. It is not a political, pro-war or anti-war book.
