Author Biography:

Matthew Harris BSc FCA Matthew is a qualified chartered accountant (FCA) with over 20 years of financial and management experience with engineering and manufacturing companies in the UK and the US. After graduating from the University of Warwick, Matthew qualified as an accountant with Price Waterhouse. After qualification, Matthew moved into industry, joining the finance team of BMW (UK), where he was responsible for financial accounting, the finance systems and managing the budgeting and reporting processes. Matthew moved to Thames Water, where he led the integration of business planning activities across the global organisation, before moving to American Water, where he led the integration of their business reporting in 2005 and the subsequent Initial Public Offering process in 2006 and 2007. Over the last 10 years, Matthew has led Divisional Finance teams in Hanson UK and Costain Group, driving the transformation of the finance functions in those organisations. Most recently, Matthew was Group Strategy & Risk Director for Costain Group, leading the development of group strategy and linking that to the principal risks of the business. Matthew was training manager for Price Waterhouse, Windsor, and has taken his passion for learning into his later roles. Matthew was also a founder member of the learning and development board of Costain, shaping the training strategy for the company. In 2018, Matthew established his own training and development business, and now works to assist organisations make their finance functions more strategic, customer-focused and supportive of broader corporate activities. He also helps the wider business understand business finance and appreciate the role a modern finance function can play in supporting growth. He leads finance for non-finance workshops, business partnering programmes and strategy training sessions for clients. He is also an executive and team coach. Matthew has also been a guest lecturer at the University of Warwick Business School and is an associate facilitator for the strategy programmes of the ICAEW.
