Description

Excerpt from Uncritical Criticism: A Review of Professor W. Robertson Smith's Commission Speech MY reason for venturing on the following criticism is, that any member of the Committee who feels himself aggrieved by the charges of 'ignorance, ' 'gross unfairness, ' and 'captiousness' freely flung out against the Whole body of them, is entitled to repel these charges by all fair and honourable means. If they are true, so much the worse for the Committee. Of the three versions of the Speech, - the spoken, the reported, and the revised, - I have used the last, as being the most favourable for the speaker, though not the fairest for the Committee. I propose to discuss the points in dispute solely on their literary and historical merits. My hope also is, that I shall discuss them as a scholar should. And therefore I appeal for a fair hearing to sensible men on both sides, Whose only object is the maintenance of truth and not the triumph of party. The merits of the points in dispute seem to me of far more consequence than questions of procedure. I have therefore limited my criticism to about sixteen pages of the Speech (pp. 9 Every one is aware that the correction of an erroneous statement usually requires more space than is taken up in originally setting forth the error.
