Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Trendy Expressions in Hong Kong Cantonese: Morphological, Semantic and Pragmatic Analyses Submitted by HO Man Yee for the degree of Master of Arts at the University of Hong Kong in June 2005 This paper attempts at analysing a special group of words which I label trendy expressions in the Cantonese dialect in Hong Kong. This group of words are also sometimes referred to as "catchwords," "popular words," "vogue words" and "slang." It is generally believed that trendy expressions originate mainly from spoken language and are used mainly in speech of a less formal nature. Newspapers are regarded as the most basic source of written communication in a society. The fact that trendy expressions are widely used in the local press indicates the importance of trendy expressions in spoken as well as written communication in Hong Kong. There have been a large number of studies on trendy expressions and popular words that have entered into the Chinese language in recent times. However, not much research has been done on the trendy expressions in Hong Kong Cantonese, in particular regarding the more recent trendy expressions. This paper aims at analysing the different aspects of trendy expressions in Hong Kong. They are seen not only as a linguistic but also as a social and cultural phenomenon.
