Description

Originally published in 1900, Through the Yukon Diggings is a narrative account of the author. It countains the details of his personal experiences during his travel in Alaska. Recorded are the scenes and hardships the author had encountered in the country as described in his experiences in the Yukon region, the Copper River region, the Cook Inlet region, and the Koyukuk or the Nome District.

Author Biography:

Josiah Spurr was born into a New England fishing family where his small size and predilection toward sea-sickness rendered him nearly useless as a commercial fisherman. Instead Spurr forged a career as a geologist regardless of his stature and apparent lack of physical strength. In 1896 he led the first expedition to map and chart the interior of Alaska, exploring the Yukon Territory, where gold had been discovered. He was generally regarded as one of the world's foremost geologists, and probably the leader in the field of economic geology (the application of geology to mining). At the age of 68 he became interested in the origin of craters of the moon, and published four books that made a major contribution to the field. His last book, "Geology as applied to Selenology", published just a year before his death, has been criticised, but was influential in the new field. He was considered a superb and pithy writer.
