Michael Powell was born in Houston, Texas, the youngest of five children born to Joseph and Julia Powell. A bright student, he excelled at school and was accepted in the Vanguard program at Jesse H Jones high school, where he graduated with honors. After graduation, Powell attended the University of Houston and after several setbacks, he eventually earned a Bachelor's of Arts in Public Relations and Marketing. Powell went on to hold a variety of jobs, from correctional officer to bank customer representative, which helped him to develop a unique insight to the world around him. In the 1990's, Powell returned to his hometown after two years in Oklahoma, Powell began to rededicate himself to his writing. Powell's first published work was "I'm Black and I'm Proud" as a part of the Perspectives poetry anthology, which garnered him a Presidential Award for Literary Excellence in 1994. Powell followed this up with works in two more anthologies, Voices of the New Century, and Treasured Poems of America. Not satisfied with this, Powell began to accumulate original works with the plan of publishing a compilation of his own works. Unfortunately time and other commitments prevented Powell from proceeded with his first solo publication until now.
