When, in June 1916, thirteen-year old "Jim" Body joined the Great Northern Railway he began what would become over a century of family railway service. Over his life, and those of his son Geoff and his grandson Ian, the era of legendary steam on the main line was to give way to a host of major changes and pass on to the dawn of a new high-speed railway. This book follows and records three very different careers and brings to life the countless incidents and adventures these true railwaymen encountered from wartime through the many changes on Britain's railways and into the modern age, providing a lively human, social and historic picture of the massive changes in railway life they experienced. 60 b/w illustrations

Author Biography:

JIM BODY started with GNR in 1916 as a lowly 13-year-old trainee. He was to remain a railwayman for his whole fifty-two-year career, finishing as divisional traffic accountant. GEOFF BODY made his start with LNER in 1945, at the age of 16, and left thirty-one years later, having risen to senior officer positions within the railways, Freightliners and Pickfords Tank Haulage. He has been writing about railways ever since. IAN BODY joined British Rail, WR, in 1972 aged 22 and worked there for twenty-seven years in operating and commercial roles. He continued his railway association through crowd management activity and now collaborates with his father in railway writing.
