"Excellent Exceptional"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

The film pulls you in and the colourisation is just exceptional. The excellency of the colourisation highlights the exceptional destruction of man on both sides. Yet humanity shows through with time 'stopped’ to retrieve their fallen comrades. A Peter Jackson spectacular.

"Starts slow but after 10mins ....."

Well worth watching. Some off the recoloured film looks as if it was originally produced a few years back and not 100yrs ago. Don't forget to watch the ‘Making of the film’.

Gave a real insight into the horrors of the 1 st World War and colour gave a graphic account of the sights that most war films don't show

Description

Employing state-of-the-art technology to transform audio and moving image archive footage more than a century old, Peter Jackson brings to life the people who can best tell the story of World War I: the men who were there. Driven by a personal interest in the conflict, Jackson sets out to explore the day-to-day experience of its combatants.

Critics Reviews for They Shall Not Grow Old:

  • ""They Shall Not Grow Old" is a nearly great talking-head documentary in which the talking heads are never seen, only heard." – Richard Brody, New Yorker
  • ""They Shall Not Grow Old" shows that actually seeing something is different from knowing it intellectually, or even from imagining it. The effect of this is moving and profound." – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle
  • “In this profound documentary event, Peter Jackson creates digital miracles-in 3D yet-to revitalize archival footage of World War I until faded history comes to vivid, vital life. You won't believe your eyes.” – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
  • “It's just images and the voices of those who were there, telling their own stories. And the result is riveting – an immersive, haunting and often transcendent experience that's unlike anything you've ever seen before.” – Lindsey Bahr, Associated Press
  • “Once again, [Jackson] has translated something that's growing ancient into a series of images and ideas a modern audience will be able to grasp. And if we can make sense of the image, we can hopefully make sense of the horror it portends.” – Scout Tafoya, RogerEbert.com
