This book provides a long term historical assessment of the main features of civil military relations in this region, from independence in the early nineteenth century to the current process of democratic consolidation, with special attention to the cases of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Peru.

Author Biography:

PATRICIO SILVA is Lecturer of Political Sociology at the Institute of Cultural and Social Studies, Leiden University, The Netherlands. He is co-editor of several books including Designers of Development: Intellectuals and Technocrats in the Third World (1995), The Politics of Expertise in Latin America (1998), and Modernization, Leadership and Participation (1999).
