Excerpt from The Revised Insular First Reader IN this book the child is taught to read, write and talk in English upon familiar topics of his daily life, -to read and to express thoughts about the things which are of most interest to him.
The vocabulary includes that of the Primer and the most important ideas concerning playing, going to school, eating, sleeping, visiting, day and night, buying and selling, in the market, at home, at school, etc. This use of familiar and interesting ideas not only makes the teaching and learning of the English language far easier, but also encourages its use independently by the pupil.
Speaking and writing form parts of each lesson. The forms of the lessons distinctly encourage the speaking of English. New words are learned in connection with the thoughts which they must be used to express. This is very important. Further, the use of new words in writing is strongly emphasized. The book contains an unusual amount of script. New words are either introduced in script or are used in script in statements, which form the basis for further written work.
The uses and many inflections of the parts of speech, the tenses of the verb, the use and comparison of adjectives and adverbs, the more important prepositions, interrogative and personal pronouns, the various kinds of sentences, the use of simple adjective and adverbial clauses, receive special consideration in the text.
By phonetic classifications of the words and by special exercises, phonics are gradually introduced and developed. Drawing and games, which are valuable helps in the teaching of English, are given due attention.
