Description

An old and well-made piece of furniture that has weathered repeated use can be returned to its original condition with the practical skills of restoration. This comprehensive manual provides a practical guide to dealing with many common problems such scratches, dents, warps, splits and watermarks, showing you how to master the techniques of a professional restorer with step-by-step instructions and easy-to-follow photographs. Different types of furniture are considered in turn, such as tables, chests, cabinets and chairs, and there is information on upholstery, as well as the essential materials and equipment. This essential guide to basic and advanced restoration techniques for antique furniture includes a comprehensive directory of tools, materials and equipment. It presents clear instructions for everyday repairs such as fixing loose joints and repairing broken legs, as well as specialist skills, such as turning, carving and upholstery, graining, gilding, marquetry and parquetry. Hundreds of step-by-step techniques are enhanced by seven full-scale in-depth projects that put the individual techniques into context, including repairing an 18th-century carved chair and restoring a badly fire-damaged Regency table. "Big glossy pages are beautifully displayed with impressive photographs and it is simply a pleasure to read. This book has been lovingly crafted and is a great addition to any workshop."
