Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) was a leading American poet who did not achieve fame until after her lifetime. Her unconventional lifestyle saw her live a life of seclusion: she never married, rarely entertained guests and spent almost all her time writing her poetry, of which only a few saw publication while she was alive. After her death, it was discovered that she had written more than 1,700 poems and she has remained popular ever since.
