This is a book that is written by a man who shares his thoughts about his travels. Many discredit Theroux as a credible ‘travel’ writer but he is not a tourist. He is a traveller. He explores, looks, feels, writes. He is not complimentary (rare are the instances where he dishes out praise) and he tells it how it is as he sees them. For that it really is a true travelers perspective.
You may think this is a rather large book to be taken up by just one area but infact it could be longer, given Theroux's style. Descriptive, truthful, accurate to the time. The book has good cadence and flows like a amiable stream.
Points that sometime clutter this flow are his tangents on literary writers & their books pertaining to places he visits and the ones he meets along the way. His weird fascination with picking up which country's have pornography is rather odd.
Apart from those 2 bumps, its a great trip on a smooth and interesting road.
