Description

Written between the 4th and 15th centuries by spiritual masters of the Orthodox Christian tradition, the texts published in 1782 as "The Philokalia" were later translated into Slavonic and then Russian. This third of four volumes contains works dating mainly from the 11th and 12th centuries. St Peter of Damaskos, the chief author, offers a clear and comprehensive survey of the spiritual life, quoting abundantly from earlier writers, and St Symeon Metaphrastis, in his paraphrase of St Markarios of Egypt, stresses the role of the Holy Spirit. Also included are texts from St Philotheos of Sinai, Ilias the Presbyter, and Theophanis the Monk.
