Description

The Parent's Guide to Eating Disorders differs from existing eating disorder self-help books in several key ways. Instead of focusing on the grim hospital stays of patients with severe disorders, Dr. Marcia Herrin emphasizes early detection and intervention and the importance of establishing healthy attitudes toward food at a young age. Rather than focusing only on older teens, a population noted for eating disorder problems, attention is also directed toward adolescents and younger children. Parents learn that contrary to high-profile eating disorder cases, it is not always necessary to spend huge sums of money to turn around an eating disorder. Not every family can afford thousands of dollars in expensive inpatient treatment to fix their problem. This book proves to parents that effective solutions can begin in the home, at virtually no cost to them other than a healthy investment of time, effort, and love. A chapter on boys and eating disorders, along with appendices on further reading; informational, support, and advocacy organizations and websites; residential and hospital programs; and references make this a complete guide to dealing with a challenging problem.
