1924. This book has grown out of a series of five lectures which were delivered by the author at the University of Liverpool. He begins: I propose, in this book, to make a plea for an organized theater, but I shall not confine myself to that plea, for a theater is merely a machine whose work depends upon the capacity of those by whom it is owned and operated. My plea, indeed, will be for such a theater, but it will include the much more important demand for an intelligent audience.
