If you scroll through New Mutants' reviews on IMDB you'll end up convinced this is a creation of the devil, but don't be fooled.
This is a stylish, inventive take on the X-Men superhero universe. I reckon most poor reviews are from people who want a standard teenage power fantasy superhero movie: this ain't that.
New Mutants is a slightly horror, mostly suspense, definitely coming of age story about mutants kept in a lab. While the story origin isn't unusual it's what the movie does with it that's useful; acting on the top shelf doesn't hurt either.
If you want a good excuse to blow the dust off the X-Men cinematic universe but don't want another movie where Wheels and Knives go at it, this is for you. It's much more remeniscent of the inventive storytelling of Logan than anything else with an X-Men label.
