Description

Excerpt from The Missouri Compromise: An Address Delivered Before the Citizens of Pittsfield This is a crisis, in which we who love our country and bear the sacred office, must speak and will Speak. If we should hold our peace, the stones would immediately cry out. If you could poll, the whole ministry of the free States to-day, you would not find one in a hundred, but that would remon strate at the top of their voices against the repeal of the Missouri compromise, which declares that from all the territory purchased of France, lying north of 36 deg. 30 min, slavery and involuntary servitude, otherwise than in the punishment of crimes, shall be, and is hereby forever prohibited. In Speaking to you tonight, I do not. Claim, with Elihu, to be quite full of the matter, but I am so near full, that I cannot hold my peace. Though I have now been in the ministry almost fifty years, I have never seen the time, but once, (i allude to the violent expulsion of the Indians, ) when the faith, and honor, and justice of the nation were so much in. Danger of being tarnished, as since the Opening of this Congress. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
