"Disappointing"
2 stars"

Does not capture the essence of the book. If you have read the book then you will understand the disappointment felt when a movie just fails to live up to the book (Harry Potter 5 anyone? xD). It really is just sad to see a well loved book be lost in the transition from ink to film.

The movie itself is ok if you havn't read the book, it has nice special effects, a ok told story and cool characters but what is lacks compared to the book is a brilliantly told story (which is executed badly in this movie), fantastic character's with amazing backstories, and just the essence itself. The story feels rushed in this movie, very rushed and disjointed compared to the book. If they even added just twenty minutes more to the movie it may have been slightly better.

Some character's were changed which didn't suit ‘normal human’ motives. Like that priest guy who's all Wormtongue like and your just like, oh great another cliche bad guy.

Just found this film rather disappointing, sorry. =(

Description

The Golden Compass – Special Edition (2 Disc Set)

The Golden Compass is an exciting fantasy adventure, set in a parallel world where people’s souls manifest themselves as small animals, talking bears fight wars, and children are mysteriously disappearing. At the centre of the story is a 12-year-old girl, Lyra, who sets out to find and rescue her best friend, Roger, and ends up on an extraordinary quest to save not only her own world, but ours as well.

The Golden Compass stars Nicole Kidman and the impossibly glamorous and possibly dangerous Mrs Coulter, Daniel Craig as Lord Asriel, a ruthless adventurer and scholar with a mysterious past, and talented newcomer, Dakota Blue Richards, who won the role of Lyra after an exhaustive search throughout England.

The film is based on the first book (published as The Golden Compass in the US and Northern Lights in UK and Europe) of Philip Pullman’s best-selling, award-winning trilogy, His Dark Materials.

Critic Reviews:

  • " Enchanting in its own way, The Golden Compass is a cold, dark fable. " – Kathi Maio
  • " This plot may sound somewhat ludicrous on paper, but Pullman has created a logical, well-thought-out world that Weitz has brilliantly translated to the big screen. " – Alonso Duralde
  • " A beautiful, thought-provoking fantasy film. " – Wesley Lovell
