"What went wrong with this production-"
2 stars"

I rate The Golden Compass as highly as I do, because of its production values.

It won an Oscar for best Visual Effects, and a nomination for Art Direction. Otherwise I would give it a 0.0!

It is a confusing mixture of themes, scenarios locations and characters. Where did the cowboy come come from-!

People who don't understand fantasy, shouldn't try to make it. They always fail.

It has to have internal logic and consistency, or it falls apart.

Aristotle said,_ “The plot must be a whole, with a beginning, middle, and end.”

The Golden Compass has none. It starts without a beginning proceeds past the centre to a conclusion that neither concludes, or comes to an ending.

A pretty poor effort; except for the technicians.

Description

The Golden Compass is an exciting fantasy adventure, set in a parallel world where people’s souls manifest themselves as small animals, talking bears fight wars, and children are mysteriously disappearing. At the centre of the story is a 12-year-old girl, Lyra, who sets out to find and rescue her best friend, Roger, and ends up on an extraordinary quest to save not only her own world, but ours as well.

The Golden Compass stars Nicole Kidman and the impossibly glamorous and possibly dangerous Mrs Coulter, Daniel Craig as Lord Asriel, a ruthless adventurer and scholar with a mysterious past, and talented newcomer, Dakota Blue Richards, who won the role of Lyra after an exhaustive search throughout England.

The film is based on the first book (published as The Golden Compass in the US and Northern Lights in UK and Europe) of Philip Pullman’s best-selling, award-winning trilogy, His Dark Materials.
