Abstract: Abstract Exponential and logarithmic functions are pivotal mathematical concepts that play crucial roles in advance mathematics. Unfortunately, they are also concepts that students find difficult to master. With the increasing availability of computers in Hong Kong secondary schools, visual analyses on mathematical functions using graphing software are made possible. In light of this, a qualitative study was designed to find out the possible effects of Winplot on students' understanding of the relationship between y = 2 and y = log x . Thirty-six Form Four students attended a computer workshop in which they could freely explore with the graphs of the two functions using the software. Their conceptions on the topic before and after the exploration were compared and contrasted. Individual in-depth interviews were arranged for selected students so that their conceptualization processes could be probed into. The report describes in details how the software verified one's concept, created new insights, consolidated metaphorical thinking, and induced misconceptions and created obstacles in learning. The results indicate that Winplot did have effects on students' conceptions, both positively and negatively, depending on how they interpreted the visual information conveyed by the computer. iii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3531230 Subjects: Mathematics - Computer-assisted instruction - China - Hong KongMathematics - Study and teaching (Secondary) - China - Hong Kong
