Description

Devon and Somerset Mines are less well known that their Cornish neighbours but they had a continuous history lasting 2000 years and included some of the world's biggest producers. This book looks at the last years of the industry, tracing its decline from a high point in the mid-19th century to near extinction in the years immediately preceding World War I. Bringing together official government returns for production, ownership, management and employment, it provides basic information of all the mines working in the district during this period. Locational information in the form of Ordnance Survey Grid References contribute to the detiles in this field guide.
