"Dark to the point of horror, but what else could it be-"
4 stars"

A masterful if rather old-fashioned political farce covering one of the most traumatic leadership transfers in the hyper-paranoid world of the USSR. The performances are razor sharp and dripping pathos, the script more than serviceable and the cinematography catches the grim tone and setting wonderfully. Strongly recommended for those tired of the glitz and glam of most modern films.

Description

A Comedy of Terrors.

The one-liners fly as fast as political fortunes fall in this uproarious, wickedly irreverent satire from Armando Iannucci (Veep, In the Loop). Moscow, 1953: when tyrannical dictator Joseph Stalin drops dead, his parasitic cronies square off in a frantic power struggle to be the next Soviet leader. Among the contenders are the dweeby Georgy Malenkov (Jeffrey Tambor), the wily Nikita Khrushchev (Steve Buscemi), and the sadistic secret police chief Lavrentiy Beria (Simon Russell Beale). But as they bumble, brawl, and backstab their way to the top, just who is running the government?

Combining palace intrigue with rapid-fire farce, this audacious comedy is a bitingly funny takedown of bureaucratic dysfunction performed to the hilt by a sparkling ensemble cast.

Critic Reviews:

  • " Co-writer/director Iannucci handpicked these actors one at a time, and you can tell. Every actor fits the role like a tailored suit set to one ideal set of mannerisms. That's high-class skill. " – Dan Buffa (KSDK News – St. Louis)
  • " From backstabbing to assassination, pajamas, and concert recordings, it all seems so terribly trivial until it's all so terribly real. It's like Mean Girls, only with the fate of millions hanging in the balance. " – Michael J. Casey (Boulder Weekly)
  • " Everything about this movie works, particularly depicting the dictator's inner circle as a frat house. Hilarious and unsettling. " – Jorge Ignacio Castillo (The Canadian Crew)
