Description

Descriptions of the peoples of this area stretch back to the Norse sagas, prior to European settlement. As a region with a long history of contact, conflict, and accommodation between Indians and non-Indians, the Northeast is important both historically and theoretically: Indian-white relations in New England were central to colonial history, and many policies later applied on a federal level were initiated in early form against the peoples of the Northeast. Covering many peoples - including the coastal Algonquian-speakers from the Micmacs to the Cree, the Northern Iroquois tribes of the Six Nations, and such Sioux tribes as the Winnebago - this guide presents a wealth of information and scholarship in a clear and accessible way.
