It would seem the Quraysh type tribespeople who supposedly against Muhammad believed in worshiping gods and goddesses for success and avoidance of pain in this life, and did not believe in life after death, would have laughed at the face of Buddha for suggesting that they need to go for extra asceticism in this life to not go on living forever in reincarnated forms.
