The sixth and final book in the six-part series Upper Canada Preserved -- War of 1812, The Ashes of War examines the pivotal period between August 1814 and March 1815, with particular emphasis on the final months of fighting and the peace negotiations. The political, social, militaristic, and economic changes that occurred in the aftermath of the war in England, the United States, and British North America (Upper Canada), as well as the fallout for the Native nations of North America, are explored. Also discussed is how the military on both sides made preparations in case war should break out once again. This included the building of massive fortifications such as Fort Henry, the installation of communications systems, including the construction of the Welland Canal, and the demilitarization of the border lakes.
