Description

This book has over two hundred pages of my original art, some of which dates back more than thirty years. There are also detailed illustrations from my novels, many of which can no longer be found in the republished editions. These illustrations range from pencil sketches to watercolor paintings. For those who don't know, an illustration drawn by hand and on real paper, is (or was) the best way to be hired for anyone trying to get work as an illustrator in a major comic company. Publishers didn't care about how awesome an already inked and colored piece was. A good inker could make even the crudest drawing by the most mediocre artist look like quality art. And that's good, if you're applying as an inker, but if you want to draw the characters they need to know how well you can draw. And no, just because someone can ink art beautifully that doesn't mean they can draw well. Almost as a rule, guys who can draw can ink. However, not everyone who can ink well can draw. These days, the right guy on a computer can make art that is both poorly drawn and inked look awesome... or at least printable. So, a publisher really needs to know the level of an artist's true drawing skills. And the only way to do that is by seeing hand drawn pencil art. You could bring finished artwork, but pencil drawings were still a must. In this age of digital art, a sketchbook filled with pencil drawings is the greatest proof of an artist's drawing ability, and you'll see plenty in this book. Once, I'd draw a piece in pencil and then quickly ink it or paint over it. These days, I often copy the pencil version and then scan various stages of the illustration from the beginning to the finished product. I enjoy seeing the process. I also want people to see that I drew, inked, and colored this art myself... without a machine.
